So, recently I have been getting into the more competitive side of Pokemon. I've watched a bunch of tutorials and I've even tried it out, but I'm not an expert...
Most teams have some combination of "Walls" (in other RPGs I believe these would be called Tanks) and "Sweepers." Both of these terms have two sub categories, a special and a physical...
A physical wall has better IV/EVs for Defense and a special wall has a decent Special Defense stat, while both the physical and special wall have a rather high HP stat.
Sweepers usually have high attack and special attack stats, and sometimes rely heavily on their speed stat.
A good Special Wall pokemon is Gengar, a good Physical Wall pokemon is Blissy.
My favorite "Fast" Special Sweeper is Slurpuff, while a good Physical Sweeper is Swak.
It is important to pick out the right ability and nature for your pokemon that you plan to use in the competitive. Natures can boost a stat by 10% while they also debuff a stat by 10%... For my Slurpuff, Felix, the recommended natures are Jolly and Adamant and the best ability to have for him is Unburden. I've heard in the past that having a Timid natured Greninja with the ability Protien is preferd... If only I had bred my first play through of X...
Attaching an item to your pokemon is almost mandatory because of the effect that it has in battle... Apparently some of the popular items to use are:
Being able to figure out and predict what your opponent is going to do is important to your stradegy and switching to match the strengths and weaknesses of their Pokemon is important. This requires you to have basic knowledge of what each pokemon is capable of and their weaknesses/resistance.
That's really all for my guide... But here are some competitive battling videos:
